Cleveland wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Areas a bat can exploit as entry points
It is never wise to assume that your residence is bat-proof, especially if you live anywhere in North America, where there always seem to be a lot of bats. One should always err on the side of caution, and conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that there are no such places which bats can exploit as an entry point to your abode.  But how does one know what to look for? This is what we shall explore in this article.

Determining the location of bat entry points
While there is nothing wrong with inspecting every nook and cranny of your house, it is far more effective to pinpoint the exact location of bat entry points. To this, you must be extremely vigilant. Be on the lookout for dark yellow/brown coloration on walls and roofs which is indicative of bat feces, or guano. If you hear scratching and fluttering sounds, try to determine where these are coming from. If you can sense the distinctive smell of guano, you must try to locate its origin as well. Finally, the very sight of bats flying in and out of your attic during dawn and dusk is perhaps the best indicator that there are holes or gaps near your roof that need to be covered up. Let's take a look at the areas through which bats can enter.

Cracks in brick walls
First off, gaps or cracks in brick walls are always inviting for bats. They are small creatures after all, and getting through such crevices is no big deal for them. In fact, even gaps as small as 3/8 inches are sufficient for them. Therefore, one must never think that any hole is too small for bats; it is wiser to just cover it up with boards or Plaster of Paris.

Loose Tiles
Most houses have tiled roofs, and while that does serve as eye candy for viewers, it is also a good way for bats to get in. You see, it doesn't take long for some of the tiles to get loose due to environmental effects or even the actions of birds and bats. Once that happens, lo and behold, the pesky mammals now have a fine opening into your house.

Attic openings
You must have observed that bats almost always end up in your attic. It is usually the most isolated and dark area of your house, so it is tempting for bats. They also have many openings that we tend to neglect, from open windows to gaps in the walls and roof.

Chimneys
Finally, Santa Claus is not the only creature who decides to slide down your chimney. Bats can also exploit this opening as an entry point to your house since it is easily accessible to them. It is best to just board up your fireplace when not in use.
